James and Emmanuel feeding the chicks

CHICKEN FOR CHANGE

We were fortunate to win a small grant to establish a project, using money from End Child Labor - Emily Sandall Foundation.  We interviewed around 20 boys working in the local quarry breaking stones, who were keen to break out of their dangerous world of hard labour.  We chose six - James, Emmanuel, Samuel, Alfred, Isaac and Eric - because they had knowledge of how to keep poultry.

Then we gave them updated training at Katende Harambe, a training centre for smallholder farmers.  Each of the quarry kids were given specialist poultry-keeping training.

The intention of the project is to replace the income the boys would have earnt from breaking stones - less than $1 for 12 hours work, usually - with income from the sames of the matured chickens.  Around Christmas, they make good money in Kampala!
